I started today by looking at two self portrait sketches: Deciding the first image was the stronger for what I had in mind, I flipped it on my phone and printed it off A4 size. I went over what was a weak print with black biro. I then laid out 8 x A4 sheets ofContinue reading “Assignment 5 prep”

Assignment 4: Portrait
I drew the following self portrait using highlighter pens in pastel shades as well as coloured pencils and graphite pencil on A3 paper. I like the slightly haunted look, though this was incidental due to my look of concentration as I peered at myself in the mirror. It is not easy to detach from anContinue reading “Assignment 4: Portrait”
Assignment 4: Reclining Figure: Tone
I found it difficult to not draw at least some lines in with the tonal shading just to add definition. I started with a sketch on A3 paper (below) just to get the placement of the figure right on the page. Then I took my black conte stick and applied it to A1 cartridge paperContinue reading “Assignment 4: Reclining Figure: Tone”
Part 4: Project 6: The Head: Exercises 1: Facial features & Exercise 2: Your own head
A1 cartridge paper using coloured crayons and chalk I had fun with these exercises reprising a technique I discovered earlier in this module: complementary colours in place of tonal values. I like drawing in colour. Complimentary colours have such an immediate impact. I shall draw using a limited colour palette on Wednesday at my nextContinue reading “Part 4: Project 6: The Head: Exercises 1: Facial features & Exercise 2: Your own head”
Part 4: Project 2: Exercise 2: A Longer Study (enlargement)
I started this about 03:00 today. I began with the scanned drawing which I then uploaded to Irfanview. I segmented it, printed the separate parts onto A4 sheets and reassembled them onto white A1 mountboard. More by luck than design, it fitted. It was a case of playing around. It went through the following renditions:Continue reading “Part 4: Project 2: Exercise 2: A Longer Study (enlargement)”
Assignment 3: Tutor Feedback
Build texture by reworking lines in chalk on black paper. Use an eraser to define smudged lines of chalk. Build up layers of colour. Finish pieces by adding detail. For example the 360° exercise. The West and South views could use colour/texture on the sky and on parked cars. I find I have a fearContinue reading “Assignment 3: Tutor Feedback”
Sketchbook
OK, confession time. I find it incredibly challenging to maintain a sketching habit – in fact any habit that is generally good for me. I do realise that, in order to consider myself to be an effective artist, I need to change that fact, and pretty damn quickly. The following are pages from my sketchbookContinue reading “Sketchbook”
Assignment 3: Waterloo Sunset: Amendment
Hopefully the added colour has improved this landscape I submitted for assignment 3. I feel I have bitten off a bit more than I can chew on this scene. Trying such a complex view in a two hour stint was I mistake, I realise now. Earlier pieces in the unit have been more successful dueContinue reading “Assignment 3: Waterloo Sunset: Amendment”
Part 3: Project 4: Exercise 1: Parallel Perspective: Amendment
I originally felt I did okay at this exercise. It’s a very good gauge of how I need to adjust my hand/eye coordination. But I thought the results were not too bad. I didn’t overwork the line drawing as I was aware I’d be drawing bold lines over it to indicate perspective. I seem toContinue reading “Part 3: Project 4: Exercise 1: Parallel Perspective: Amendment”
Research Point: LS Lowry, David Hockney
I love LS Lowry’s work. I like any artist’s work that seeks to strip a subject down to its essence. Another artist who achieves this is Alfred Wallis. I first came upon him in Kettle’s Yard in Cambridge (well worth a visit) There are some of his paintings in The Tate, St Ives. In hisContinue reading “Research Point: LS Lowry, David Hockney”
