A1 cartridge paper using coloured crayons and chalk I had fun with these exercises reprising a technique I discovered earlier in this module: complementary colours in place of tonal values. I like drawing in colour. Complimentary colours have such an immediate impact. I shall draw using a limited colour palette on Wednesday at my nextContinue reading “Part 4: Project 6: The Head: Exercises 1: Facial features & Exercise 2: Your own head”

Part 4: Project 4: Exercise 1: The Structure of the Human Body
I started with my feet. I think these turned out ok though it needs more work: I went directly from feet to hands. Always a tricky subject. I think that I convince myself that I can’t draw hands especially prior to sitting down to do just that: I suppose the obvious artist to go andContinue reading “Part 4: Project 4: Exercise 1: The Structure of the Human Body”
Part 4: Project 3: Exercise 4: Energy
After a week where I believed I had the COVID-19 virus, and then got better PDQ, therefore wondering whether I actually had it or some other less debilitating Coronavirus, I’ve not done too badly. The above is taken from a group of sketches I did from a video of myself playing my fiddle. Of courseContinue reading “Part 4: Project 3: Exercise 4: Energy”
Part 4: Project 3: Exercises 2 & 3: Essential Elements & Stance
I just took part in an online life drawing session. It was a lot more help than I had anticipated. Once I got over the slightly weird quality to the low rez image I focused on the light and shade and forgot to worry so much about details. The following are 2 minute pencil sketchesContinue reading “Part 4: Project 3: Exercises 2 & 3: Essential Elements & Stance”
Part 4: More thoughts on Assignment 5
I get cross with myself because I know I can do better. Producing below par stuff leaves me feeling dejected. The following was done with experimental use of Staedler highlighter pens. What I like about them is they do not leave overlapping lines where one line crosses another, but combining colours is possible as theyContinue reading “Part 4: More thoughts on Assignment 5”
Part 4: Project 2: Research Point: Foreshortening
The above was an attempt at foreshortening my own reflection using pencil in a kraft paper sketchbook. It looks wrong – as though I have a huge body on short stumpy legs with small feet. My brain made an adjustment to my perception of my feet compared to my head. Actually, as seen in theContinue reading “Part 4: Project 2: Research Point: Foreshortening”
Part 4: Project 2: Exercise 2: A Longer Study (enlargement)
I started this about 03:00 today. I began with the scanned drawing which I then uploaded to Irfanview. I segmented it, printed the separate parts onto A4 sheets and reassembled them onto white A1 mountboard. More by luck than design, it fitted. It was a case of playing around. It went through the following renditions:Continue reading “Part 4: Project 2: Exercise 2: A Longer Study (enlargement)”
Part 4: Project 3: Exercise 1: Basic Shapes
I spent about 50 minutes on this exercise. I’d erased all the basic shape lines before I realised these were pertinent to this blog post. I found using them useful as a way of measuring. I found the foreshortening effect was more reliably executed by using basic shapes to form the torso, legs and feet.Continue reading “Part 4: Project 3: Exercise 1: Basic Shapes”
Assignment 5: Further thoughts
I’m just playing around a little further with this idea. My aim was to create a cubist type image of a group of women engaged in yoga poses. I’m still not sure it’s going to work. I think the problem is that I’m not working from life but from photographs. Photos are ok but youContinue reading “Assignment 5: Further thoughts”
Part 4: Project 2: Exercise 2: A Longer Study
I had to overcome my sense of empathy for my sitter who, as you may notice from his expression, wasnt entirely comfortable with sitting still for much longer than 10 minutes at a time. Therefore I got the main markers in place: the top of the head, the forearm and elbow on the right ofContinue reading “Part 4: Project 2: Exercise 2: A Longer Study”
